Previously From Car Chronicles…

I have nothing for you guys today. So instead of attempting to make something up, I’m posting what my daughter Nikki, a.k.a. Smiley Face, wrote for her first composition assignment. You will notice that there are a couple of topics that we discussed that I’ve forgotten to write about but she thought of them as important enough to include in her essay.

Car Chronicles

By

Nikki Austria, 7Zisko

When my dad and I drive home, I often hear some interesting facts on the radio that would start a conversation between my dad and me. Sometimes I blurt out random things that also start our conversations.

One time while driving to school, I ask my dad “How Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit can all be the same person?”

He responded and said “Jesus, God, and the Holy spirit are all the same person because…” he paused and thought for a minute and continued. “You know how I work, teach, and be a dad, right? So that means I am a worker, a teacher, and a dad. That means I am all of those things but, I am one person.” When he said this I finally understood why Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit are all the same person.

Another conversation we had was our “Family Shapes”. When I brought this up, we were naming shapes for our family. We started off with CJ. We said that CJ was an acute angle. We said this because he is very cute. Next was me, I said that I was a right angle. I said this because I am at the right age to do things on my own. After me was Benito, my brother. He was an irregular shape because he was just plain weird. The next one up is my older and only sister Joanna. We said that she has too many sides. We said that because she has different emotions. Some of them are happy, gloomy, angry, and hungry. After her was BJ my eldest brother. He was an oblong shape because his body and face is shaped like an oblong. I said that my mom’s shape is a circle. I said this because she is perfect. The last of our family shapes is my dad. I said that he was a triangle because he only has three different emotions, tired, hungry and happy. So that’s our family Shapes.

Our next conversation was that how the world received its colors. I asked my dad this and he responded by saying that everything has some kind of note. Like the grass, he said that it has a low note because its color is dark green. Not only that they have notes, they need the sunlight from the sun to make the color. When he said this I was puzzled. So when I asked why, he then explained to me that when there is no light all you see is nothing but black. After that I finally knew how the world got its colors.

Another day means another conversation. So while we were in the car, my dad said that someday one of us will be rich. He went one by one telling me how we are going to be rich. First one is BJ, if he keeps working at the airport and save money he will become rich. Second was Joanna, she is very smart that she could make a cure for some kind of disease. Third was Benito, he will become rich because he can make artwork. He once made this vase with handles and a cover. He didn’t draw this, he just made it. The fourth one is me, my dad said that I will become rich by playing sports or become an athlete. He also said that I will be a good tennis player and someday challenge Joanna to a game. The last one is CJ, he could become rich by becoming a famous singer. He is a great singer. He keeps singing the coconut song for the coconut trees. Another song he knows how to sing is “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban. Of course the back-up plan is MAMA!

These conversations took place in 2007-2008 school year. These were based on sometimes real events or something that comes out of our heads. When next year comes Benito will join our conversations in the car. Then we will have brand new conversations together.

  1. Sal Said,

I enjoyed this imensly. I can’t wait till my kids are old enough to have car talks on the way to school. You are a very lucky guy and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

  1. ilinap Said,

I love the Family Shapes. What wonderful metaphors! How sad that families who sit in the car pool line with a DVD playing will never experience such rich, and enriching, conversations.

  1. RC Said,

I really love how you explained the Holy Trinity… I may have to borrow that for Sunday School. Those third-graders love to ask questions, I’ve discovered.

  1. Dot Said,

This is a great post by Nikki. It really shows what a good father and teacher you are, and it looks like she has inherited some of your writing talent.

  1. @Nikki - He was an irregular shape because he was just plain weird…now there’s a sister for you. *chuckle*

@Chris - Ah, out of the mouths of babes. This was great. Interestingly, some of my best conversations with my children have been in the car. Some have made me laugh so hard, I have almost driven off the road. One made me cry so hard, I had to pull to the side of the road. We did a lot of weekly driving to meet up with their dad for Child Swap weekends. You have a wonderful opportunity daily. That’s fantastic.

  1. You guys are already rich, rich in love.

What a great way, Chris, to connect with your kids while you’re riding together in the car! And, Nikki, great job putting this together and sharing it here - you’re an awesome writer! Continue to enjoy those conversations…
