Feedburner, RSS Subscription, and Comments

Yesterday one of my children asked if I knew exactly how many people read my blog. I said I know for sure that there’s probably a good 20 regular readers, which include everyone in the house and my regular commentors. My page views doesn’t really tell the real story because some of the views are from search engines looking for updates.

My Feedburner and my RSS subscription doesn’t help either because it’s been 4 months now since I started blogging and it is still stuck at 4 subscribers.

I wanted to do something to find out exactly how many readers I get everyday.

I thought maybe if I buy one of those traffic analyzers then I can be sure of the numbers, but I decided not to because I’m too cheap and too broke to purchase it.

Maybe if I held a contest to see how many will subsrcibe to my blog then I would get a ballpark number, but I scrapped this idea because I’m too lazy to keep track of all the entries and other things that goes on with holding a contest.

I could just implore my readers to click on the little guy on the right hand corner with the orange rss button and subscribe to my feed but that’s not my style. I want people to subscribe out of their own volition and not because they are being cajoled to subscribe.

What I did though is that I took Barbara’s, from Blogging Without A Blog, advice. She told me to put Comment Luv, so I did; actually she just wrote about it and I took it as a personal advice. She said that this could increase my comments which means that I can get a better idea on how many actually read  my blog everyday. Barbara has given me a lot of blogging tips. Man, I wish I discovered her blog when I started blogging. Who knows where I would be by now?

Perhaps I shouldn’t worry about my blog traffic. I should just write good content and hopefully people will come and read and subscribe. But, sometimes it’s awesome to know that there are actually people reading my blog. And if I knew that a lot of people are actually paying attention to my writing then I would become an even better writer. You see, when I write, I always keep my audience in mind. I’m not the type to write just for myself, because if I did then I would just use a notebook instead of the internet to keep a journal.

Maybe the reason why I’m writing about this is because my mind is pre-occupied with work related stuff; which means I can’t concentrate enough to produce quality content. If this is the case, my content would be crap for the next couple of weeks because as a school administrator, the next couple of weeks will be hectic.

So I guess this post is just a filler. I can’t wait to get home when my best and worse critics get a hold of this post. I’m sure one of them will say, “Hmmm…nothing to write about, huh?”

And of course, I would say, “I got a lot of stuff to write about, there are all in here (pointing to my head).”

On a side note; this one is for Smiley Face.

“Sorry sweety, Daddy didn’t hit a homeroom today. This post is a dribbler back to the pitcher for an easy out.”

  1. Vered Said,

I don’t consider this a filler. I think it’s an interesting question. I would look into the issue you have with your Feedburner account - it’s weird that it doesn’t get updated. Number of comments is certainly a good indication of a blog growing and of having regular readers. Another important question: do you have a goal in mind? Do you feel that an X number of regular readers would make you happy?

I had to check out your blog when I read on Cheeky’s Hideaway that you agreed that UW Union is the best place to have a beer. How right you are! I’ve enjoyed reading your blog and will add you to my blogroll. Keep it up!

  1. @Vered–I wish to have at least 100K readers but that’s wishful thinking. Realistically, I would be happy at 100. Once I reach this then I will move the bar a little higher.

  1. Storm Said,

    great post chris!

as a new blogger, it is timely for me.

i started blogging as was to work through my thoughts. i like the idea of the web accessibility and love the anonymity. i am one of those neurotic people who would watch her words if she knew some of the people in her life might be reading her writings.

my blog really is a way to help me find the beautiful, strong girl i know lives inside of me. i want her to come into the sunshine.

that being said, yesterday i started thinking about the bloggers need for commenters and subscribers…makes me smile. it is a positive reaction that i think many of us crave. i love getting comments on my thoughts.

thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and commentary — currently being too cheap and broke to buy all the widgets, i am especially grateful.

I need to start paying more attention to technology (can you believe my blog still has the default wordpress format :-( ) You can get a free version of “sitemeter” and put it on your blog. It lets you see how many visitors came to your site, where they came from, and how long they stayed.

  1. Robin Said,

Hi Chris - I always really enjoy reading your posts - even the first one I read which was about how tired you were! And I love the way you talk about your family. I have only subscribed to a few blogs, mainly to try to understand how RSS works - I bookmark (favorites) the blogs I look at, which makes more sense to me. Then I just go through the list when I want to look at blogs.

You might want to try StatCounter on your site. It’s free and it’s really good. Get back to me if you want a hand putting the code on your site. It gives real time results, whereas Google Analytics is about a day behind. GA is also free, and better for the long term, because SC is only free for a limited log size.

Thanks for the tip about Comment Luv - when I saw that on sites I thought it was part of their theme. I’ve noticed it often picks up my second last post, though, so I dunno.

    Cheers Chris - Robin

  1. Google analytics is one of the best and free tools that is out there. I recommend you put it in your wordpress footer and watch what people are interested in. You can see what articles are popular and how you can repeat your success.

Personally I think Feedburner count is messed up. Mine flatlines for a week then jumps up. I don’t think it’s that sporadic.

  1. Hi Chris,

It looks like CommentLuv is working great on your comments. I’m so happy I could be of help. If there’s ever anything you need help on, feel free to ask. If I don’t know the answer, I can probably steer you in the right direction.

As I mentioned in response to your comment today, I use AWStats, along with Google Analytics and three others I have been testing. Unfortunately they all give different stats, but you can get a general idea of what your visitor counts are.

Thanks for the link love. I appreciate it.

based just on the discussion on your blog, I think you’ve got way more subscribers than me, and mine says ‘25′

  1. Chris -

You are an amazing writer. You deserve lot more than 100. You and I started at just about same time. I’d like to share what works for me. It has worked quite well in past month or so.

    1) Visit bloggers that are in our new with promising content. Make commitment to comment at least on 2-3 new blogs every day. It will take 15-30 mins.

    2) Start developing contact with established blogger via emails, trackbacks and guest posting.

    3) Let your best content be on other blogs as a guest post. I know that it is tempting to keep best post for our own blog but I learned this from Leo and it is a great advice.

I struggled initially but now I’m glad to see my subscriber base growing well. I’m well over 200.

Just my 2 cents. We love you as a person. As Vered said, your comments depict quite different picture than what you wrote but that is what makes you a great blogger in my judgment as your honesty shows in your writing.

Hey Chris, from the look of how many comments you get on your blog posts, I would say you have more than 4 readers. Are you sure that’s correct? And I was about to suggest http://www.statcounter.com, and saw Robin already had. I use it too, and love it!

You can get a free widgert thingy through sitemeter. I have one. It only took me 3 months to get it working right because I didn’t know how to do the widget thing. Oh…I’ve come so far, and yet have even farther to go. :)

Sitemeter will tell you who is stopping at your site and where they come from.

Chris - Why the labels? Are you really cheap? Or do you have better places to spend the money, specifically your school? Now ask yourself if you are still cheap. These are just some of the labels we place on ourselves which will conflict us later in life, if they are not already conflicting us.

  1. @Everyone–Yes, upon completion of this post I had 4 subsrcibers, now I have 7. Thank you for all the suggestions. I implemented some of them and I discovered that my traffic doesn’t reflect my subscription. I get an average 700 page views a day and about 200 unique visitors per day. So I guess all is well…I decided not sweat the subscription thing…

Thanks for all the kind words people. *blush*

@Bruno–Yes, you’re right. I’m not cheap, although my children would say so. I’m very selective on where I spend my money.

  1. Rita Said,

I came to your site via a google blog search for feedburner and yours was one of the first to come up. I recently put feedburner on my site and now I’m worried more people are going there than to my site, and it’s not coming up in the analytics. Does anyone else have this problem?

  1. I’ve seen Comment Luv out there, and thought it was an interesting concept. But it wan’t until this ‘filler’ post that I was spurred into actually installing it. And now I have! We’ll see if it works in action as well as in theory. For my site, I mean. Thank you, Chris!

  1. Interesting post and one that many of us bloggers often wonder about. I don’t have wordpress yet for my blog but have been wanting to switch my main site over to wordpress from php. Just not sure how to go about it. Does commentLuv work on blogger sites?

Looks like you have more readers than you realized and you are doing much better than you thought. I’m new to your blog but have found it fun and interesting thus far. Have you tried blog carnivals or any blog parties yet? They bring some traffic to your site as well, that could potentially turn into regular readers/subscribers.

  1. I got rid of the feedburner subscribers count on my site too. Lol. It fluctuates quite a lot as it’s most likely a web spider that gets the RSS for a short period of time, which creates a jump in the subscribers for a time being.

    Keep on writing. :)
