How To Kill The Environment: Eat Meat

Do you know that when you eat meat you’re killing the environment?

What?!

This can’t be right. I have always been environmentally conscious. I changed all the light bulbs in my house to energy saving bulbs. I conserve energy by using cold water to wash our clothes. And, I drive a small car.

But, I do love a mouth-watering, tender, juicy steak.

How could this be? After all these years, after all my efforts, I still contribute greatly to the destruction of the environment. Is it possible that my sermons and speeches to my children and students about being environmentally responsible is all for naught?

How can eating a nice t-bone steak be environmentally hazardous?

Livestock consumption of water and grain is the culprit. Huge quantity of fresh-water and grain is needed in order to sustain the massive farms and factories that produce meat, who by the way supply our fast food restaurants and grocery stores.

So, it’s not really eating meat that is the root caused but our insatiable appetite for meat that is the problem.

This at least makes me feel better. I don’t have to give up meat to be environmentally conscious. I just have to cut down on my meat consumption. Of course, this is easier said than done. To make a bigger impact, not only do I have to reduce my meat eating habits but I also have to convince my own children and students that this is the right thing to do.

But before I work on my children, I need to work on myself. This means that no more spam, vienna sausage, corned beef, and bacon (I can’t believe I just wrote that). No more staple Filipino food like pork sinigang, adobo, and dinuguan. I must be going insane for even considering this. The term oxymoron just popped into my head or just plain moronic– Meatless Chris.

Is this even possible? I can’t even give up meat for God during the Lenten Season. How can I possibly make this sacrifice for the environment? Plus, knowing my children, since I’ve raised them properly, they are going to make this as hard as possible for me so that they won’t have to do it.

But, as I contemplate on this and feel the cold sweat running down my back, for now, I will make a pledge to eat meat only on weekends. Then, we’ll see what happens next.

God help me!

  1. Ako Said,

    Who cares. You’re children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children’s children Will Suffer for your meat eating habits.

  1. Ako Said,

You can always go for Tofu. Just think its meat. They taste the same.

  1. Ako Said,

If you do give up meat, i will eat enough for the both of us. hahahahahahhahahahahhahahhahahaha

  1. RC Said,

I always try to remember that our ancestors used to only partake of meat in small portions and not that frequently. Yet we consider it a staple with every meal.

Good luck - I know I’m trying to help my Little Dude have a healthier lifestyle than the one I created for myself, and it is tough to change the lifestyle the Hubby and I are used to. But we are trying, as we both want to be healthier, be environmentally conscious and pass on those traits to Little Dude.

Hi Chris, thanks for commenting on my blog.

One thing to consider about meat is grass-fed animals. It is possible to raise cows on much less energy-intensive means, by pasture feeding them. This is also the cow’s natural diet–their digestive systems are “designed” to process grass, not grains.

Massive numbers of animals in any one place will damage the environment, whether through overgrazing, pollution from their excrement, or the large amounts of water and grain necessary to feed them, as you mentioned. Let’s not forget all the antibiotics required to stave off the illnesses they get from eating the wrong thing! So, your idea that it’s not the meat itself, but the amount of meat we eat that is the problem, makes sense to me.

  1. Becky Said,

Tofu is pretty delicious, but nothing compares to a fat steak. Thankfully, due to diet related crap, I can’t eat it often.

  1. Joanna Said,

just small steps at a time =]
    however if you do fail,
then you’ve at least saved your children from having to sacrifice scrumptious, delicious mouth-watering mmmeeeaaaatttt

  1. Catherine Said,

Oh, I know. Because of environmental reasons, and my conviction that God would strongly prefer his creatures be treated better than as animal factories, I pretty much a vegetarian in my mind. I’m getting close to feeling I should be in my mouth too…but its hard.

  1. Andrea Said,

Good for you for considering this. Every person who cuts down on their meat consumption makes a difference and saves water, land, and animals, of course! You don’t have to just eat tofu all day - cut out red meat first, try different kinds of pasta, bean, egg, sandwich, and seafood dishes, eat more veggies in general. You’ll live longer, have less crap in your system, and do something nice for the earth. I’m a converted veggie and I feel great.

  1. Chris

Well, I never thought of this before, so thanks for giving me something to think about.

I try to be environmentally conscious with low impact light bulbs, turning off all but the essential lights in the evening, no air con, more blankets/clothes and snuggles rather than lots of heater hours in winter, and one vehicle. I also recycle and am a very conscious consumer. I re-use or swap goods with other people not to add to land fill and I always give my unwanted goods t charity to maximize their lifespan.

I think I’m trying to convince myself that I do enough not to have to give up meat as well!

But good on you for sticking to your principles. Your kids are very lucky to have a dad like you. I wonder if they realize that yet…

  1. Eric Said,

The only thing wrong is the fact that many people do not know when to stop eating. Eating clean meat is about the best thing that you can do. Eating clean meat as close to being raw is how our diet should be. Our diet needs to be in high protein (from meat) and fat (from animals). You can take vitamins. But those are not the same make up and therefore, will not benefit you in anyway. There is no evidence that proves vegans have less colon cancer or other things than meat eaters. That is, if you to what your body needs, not till you can’t stuff another spoonful in your mouth. Yes, meat in fast food is bad, so are the vegetables with the dressing. Vegetables were never meant to be part of our diet, as they do not breakdown in our digestive system like other plant eaters. You are not killing the planet by eating meat. Changing your light blubs for the purpose of conserving energy is about as efficient as draining the ocean using a thimble. How about this, don’t eat fast foods. Get meat as fresh as you can, then you cook it, rarer is better. Don’t consume sugar. Eat till what your body needs, not till you are full. Lastly, if you are going to write an opinion page on the internet, stick to the headline or catch phrase. That’s like writing “sex” in the first sentence. of your paragraph and having the paragraph nothing to do with “sex.” Here’s a better catchy headline, “How to save the planet: Kill yourself.” If you are that worried about the environment, kill yourself, and don’t have any children, so they won’t have to suffer your doings. And shame on you for teaching your kids to put their health in jeopardy because you are too self righteous to actually look into the matter to see that your theories are wrong.

  1. Godsfavoriteperson Said,

i will eat meat every day from now on, because now i know that it will annoy the environmentalists who cant seem to think of anything better to do than say that my lovely ford truck is harming the environment THINK OF SOMETHING BETTER TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE THAN PROMOTE THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE NOBODY WHO HAS A LOGICAL BRAIN (and chooses to use it) CARES ABOUT IT. MEAT IS GOOD, SO EAT IT . dont deprive yourself of meat just to promote environmental protection. global warming isnt happening so you can cook as much as you want, and above all who cares about the consumption of water, it will rain again and replace the water that was used.
this all started when some loser came up with incorrect calculations, and because you need absolutely no proof to make the public believe you, the environmentalists era started.

so get a grip on reality, use your common sense ok.
